Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa January 20, 2010)

LaVETA POTTER ... LaVeta Nathel [Butler] Potter, daughter of Harvey Robert and Marie Eva [Nivens] Butler, was born January 10, 1918 in Saline, Missouri and died January 10, 2010 at Winterset Care Center in Winterset, Iowa. God gave her to us on January 10, 1918, and God called her back to Him on the same day 92 years later.

LaVeta married Fredrick "Wilber" Potter on December 19, 1938. Three children were born to this union: Freddie Harve, Janice Marie, and LaVoy Kay.

LaVeta was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a great friend.

She spent her childhood years living on the farm in Saline, MO. She met Wilber on a blind date in the summer of 1938 and married him that December. She followed him where his work took them and no matter how many moves in a year, they always came back to Iowa.

LaVeta was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Leon, Iowa and was a member there for many years.

She never knew a stranger, so that helped with her jobs. She sold Amway, and Stanley Home Products where she was a Unit Manager. She worked at Catherine's Clothing Store for a few years.

She loved to cook and made several different kinds of candies for Christmas for many years. LaVeta loved to sew and made many clothes for her family. She also liked to crochet and made several afghans. Later in years (the 1980's) she tried oil painting and wasn't too bad at it. She painted a few pictures. LaVeta loved to play cards, games, and going to the casino. She grew up playing cards. After Wilber passed, LaVeta moved to Seymour to be closer to Jan. She had made several new friends there. She would drive her friends to bingo, and they also played cards.

Family always came first, and she was "Mom" to a large extended family over the many years, including young adults who came to live with her.

Preceding LaVeta in death were her husband Fredrick "Wilber" Potter, an infant son, son Freddie Harve Potter, daughter Janice Marie Lira, and many loved ones.

Surviving are her daughter LaVoy Buckingham of Winterset; sister Aleta Mullins of Belton, Missouri; daughter-in-law Elsie Potter of Osceola, Iowa; 4 grandchildren; Robert and Fredrick Potter of Osceola, Scott Buckingham of Peru, Iowa, and Shawn Buckingham and wife Kara of Prairie City, Iowa; 5 great grandchildren: Kaela, Ryan, Haley, Trevor, and Alyssa Buckingham; sister-in-law Betty Potter of Grimes, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
