DEATH NOTICE:

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa January 13, 2010)

BOWEN, Naomi Abigail [Allen], 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Leon, Iowa, died January 8, 2010 at Silver Pines, Cedar Rapids. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held today, 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, at First Presbyterian Church in Leon with Rev. Jack DePond officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Leon Cemetery. Arrangements are through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon.

There will also be a memorial service at Silver Pines in Cedar Rapids (136 36th Ave. SW) at 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 18, with Rev. Ron Lewis officiating.

Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church of Leon.

NAOMI BOWEN ... Naomi Abigail [Allen] Bowen, 86, died January 8th, 2010 at Silver Pines, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Leon, Iowa. Naomi moved to Cedar Rapids to be closer to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was able to spend a great deal of time with them. She liked to say that she was "blessed."

Naomi was born January 18th, 1923 in Ringgold County, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband Adrian (Jiggs) Bowen, her parents, Frank and Hattie [Hacker] Allen, her brothers Albert, Keith, Glenn and Warren Allen, and her sisters Frances Allen and Dorcas Redman. Naomi is survived by her brother Morris Allen, son Allen Bowen and his friend Mary Cunningham, Muscatine, her daughter Mary Young and husband Rod, Cedar Rapids, and her daughter Abbie Bowen, Leon, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Naomi started teaching at country schools at the age of 17. She attended Graceland University, Lamoni, Simpson College, Indianola, Drake University, Des Moines, and Greeley CO to obtain her teaching credentials and continue her education. Naomi was very proud of the fact that she taught school for 47 years and had many stories of her experiences in the country school. Many times she would say, "I remember when I had ..... in school. He / she would ...... "

Naomi belonged to many organizations. She held local and state offices in ISEA, DAR, Eastern Star, Retired Teachers, Decatur County Hospital volunteers and the First Presbyterian Church in Leon. She served actively in each organization with which she was affiliated. Naomi loved to travel and could always tell you the year, the route and what she and Jiggs saw. Rod and Reel Lake had many fond memories for her. Naomi was proud of her heritage, family, church and community.

Most recently, Naomi resided at Silver Pines making it her home. She participated in the group activities and outings, card and domino games and made many friends.
