SCOTTIE GENE GERE of Van Wert, son of Scott and Bessie [Harris] Gere, was born Dec. 24, 1918, in Colome, S.D., and died Nov. 16, 1994 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 65.

As a young boy, he moved with his parents to a family farm near White River S.D. he was nicknamed Shorty after a family friend.

He graduated from the White River High School in 1947. He married Merna Grimm on October 27, 1951at Rapid City, S.D. The couple were the parents of five children: Shelda Renae, Avis LaRoe, Velma Rogene, Elwin Delilah and Darwin Eugene.

After farming he went into the construction business. In 1971, the family moved to Iowa. He was a building contractor most of his life. His last postilion was a security guard at Jimmy Dean Meat Co. in Osceola. He devoted his life to his family in his remaining years.

He is survived by his wife, Merna; four daughters: Shelda Hill and her husband Firdie Hill and Avis Miler and her husband Elmer Miler, Leon; Velma Wengryn and her husband John Wengryn of Davis City; Elwin Snethen and her husband Daivd Snethen of Lamoni; son Darwin Gere and Tina Kastler of Van Wert; 13 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and one great grandchild: Diana, Denise, Deanna and Duane Hill; Tony Miler, Okelena Miler Irwin and husband David Irwin; Todd, Katie, Alison, Samuel, Mara, and Tamara Wengryn and husband Bill; great-grandson Clayton Hill; Matthew and Tena Snethen; Ransom and Billy Whitham.

Mr. Gere was the youngest of ten brothers and sisters: Joyce Schmaltz, Spencer, Neb; Mable Koepp, Bell, Calif.; Carol and Raymond Brood, Medford, Ore.; Verna and Al Silva, Mt. View, Calif.; Frances and Clarabelle Gere, Hidden Tember, S.D.; Ned Gere of Denver Colo. ; Ira and Carolyn Gere, White River, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Elgie, Doyle and Dean; two grandsons, Kirk Miler and Johnny Wengryn.

Funeral services were held at the Assembly of God Church in Van Wert on Nov. 21, 1994. Officiating were Pastors James Booth an Scott Clarke. Music was provided by June Booth.

Burial was in the Van Wert Cemetery with Kale Funeral Home of Osceola in charge. Casket bear (sic) were Darwin Gere, Elmer Miler, David Snethen, Firdie Whitham, Duane Hill and Clayton Hill.
