Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
March 27, 1913

A very sad accident occurred Sunday morning at the Clyde Marvin farm which
resulted in the death of CLARENCE BRIGHT, the seven-year-old son of Mr. And
Mrs. J.W. BRIGHT, who reside four miles northwest of this city. The two
BRIGHT boys, WILLARD and CLARENCE, with about six other school children,
gathered at the Marvin grove, a mile west of Mr. BRIGHT's place, to roast
Easter eggs. While waiting for the others to gather, WILLARD, the older of
the two boys, who had brought an ax along, attempted to cut down a small
sapling or bush. While in the act of chopping, WILLARD in some way missed
the bush, and the ax slipped from his hands, striking with the sharp edge,
his brother CLARENCE, who was standing only a few feet away. The ax struck
him across the side of the neck, completely severing the jugular vein and
cutting an artery and death resulted in a very few minutes. Word was
immediately sent to the parents and to Leon for a physician. Mr. Casey and
Mr. Jas. Hull, who live near, were the first to reach the scene and they, in
company with Lee Butts, carried the boy to his home, where the wound was
dressed by Dr. Bowman shortly afterwards, but death had resulted before help
arrived. This is indeed very sad for the parents and family, and they have
the sincere sympathy of their many friends.

The funeral took place Monday afternoon at two o'clock at Union Chapel,
conducted by John Garber, of the Brethren Church.
