ALICE JOSEPHINE EDMISTON, daughter of JAMES and RACHEL EDMISTON, was born October 6, l854, in Indiana and departed this life, January 4, l924, at her home in Van Wert, Iowa, at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 29 days.

She moved with her parents to Iowa in l855, and was united in marriage, March l, l874, to WILLIAM A. IRVING. To this union seven children were born: CORDELL, the oldest son, having preceded his mother in death in l9l3; FRED A., ORA W., CECIL PELSOR, MAE LAMOREE, of Van Wert; ERNIE, of Grand River, and VERNIE, of Des Moines, who were all present at her bedside during her last illness, except O.W. and V.B..

She was converted in her girlhood and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and all through the years kept the faith to the end. She was a kind and loving mother, always thinking of the welfare of her children. She was one of the many mothers who gave to the service of her country, two sons, and who stood the perilous times, waiting and praying each day for their safe return. About two years ago, she became afflicted with rheumatism and part of the time since then has been an invalid sitting in her chair, patiently bearing her afflictions. She recovered sufficiently to be able to walk around and was in good spirits until the ringing in of New Year, when she became suddenly ill with rheumatism. All that loving hands could do was done to extend her life, but her heart was not strong enough to withstand the shock and on Friday afternoon at 5:20, God claimed her and she passed away as if she were going to sleep.

Besides leaving a host of friends, Mother IRVING leaves nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a sister at Hamburg, Iowa, and one sister preceded her into the Great Beyond three years ago.

Funeral services were held in the Van Wert Methodist Episcopal Church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30. The whole community turned out to pay their respects to this devoted mother in Israel. The sermon was preached by her Pastor, Rev. James Walls. Her body was laid to rest in the Van Wert Cemetery.
