Thursday, January 25, l923GEORGE HOWARD CULVER, was born at Garden Grove, Iowa, July 29th, l858, and died at his home in Ensign, Kansas, December 25, l922, being 64 years, 4 months and 26 days old at the time of his death.
Born in Iowa, his early life was spent at the place of which we have heard him so often speak, Garden Grove; and there he lived until about the year, l875, when he came with his parents to Toronto, Kansas, at which place he lived for about seven years, when he changed to Gunnison County, Colorado, and then after five years he went back to Toronto, coming to Gray County, Kansas, in l906, where he lived until the time of his death.
The deceased was united in matrimony to ALLETTIE L. MARSH in February, l882, at Matamora, Illinois, and to this union were born eight children, two of whom preceded their father to the great beyond, LOTTIE, the oldest daughter, having died at the age of two years; and MAY, the second daughter, who was the life companion of our fellow townsman J.W. ROBERTS, and passed away in California in l9l6, and GEORGE HOMER, ALFRED, DON and IRA CULVER, and MRS. ARY SUTTER, still survive their father and were all present at the funeral.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his loved and loving wife, five sons, and one daughter; one elderly brother, JOSEPH CULVER, of Garden Grove, Iowa; and his nephew, HARRY CULVER, of the same place, who was present at the funeral, and many other more distant relatives and many friends, for his every acquaintance was his friend.
MR. CULVER was a man of sterling qualities who never shrank from duty, and who may have met reverses, but who never met defeat. He was one of the men who enjoyed pioneering, and whose integrity and sturdy habits helped to blaze the way for his less progressive fellowmen, and it is to the men of this type that our community and every community owes so much for its development.
He united with the Methodist Church at Cave, in l908 and lived a faithful and conscientious Christian life to the end. His death was caused by paralysis. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Ensign at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. David, of Burdett, and the body was sent to Garden Grove, Iowa for burial, being accompanied by MR. HOMER CULVER and MR. HARRY CULVER.
