Thursday, September l4, l922The subject of this sketch, MR. J.E. SMITH, was born near Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, this state, on the 5th day of February, l856, and died at his home near Van Wert on the 6th day of September, l922, being at the time of his death, sixty-six years, seven months and one day old. He was left an orphan at a very early age, his mother having died when he was but six years old. About three years prior to that time, he was received into the home of MR. and MRS. MATTHEW SMITH, where he was treated in all respects as a son. In this home he grew to manhood. From this home he went out into the world a man, never to forget his obligations to this worthy couple. In after years, he was able in a measure at least, to repay them for their kindness to him by opening his own home to his foster father, furnishing him care and protection through his declining years.
When he was but thirteen years old, he came with his foster parents to this county, locating in Long Creek Township near which place he spent the remainder of his life. Over forty years ago, he united with the I.O.O.F. and has through all these years been a faithful, loyal and conscientious member. He was also at the time of his death a member of the Rebekah Lodge. He was married in l884 to MISS ISABELLE RAMSEY of this county. To this union were born four children; FRED C. SMITH and ARTA M. SMITH, both of Van Wert and well-known people of this community. HARLEY J. died May l6, l898, when he was but two years and four months old, ARBY L. died April 23, l90l, being at the time of his death three years and four months of age.
MR. SMITH was as well and favorably known as anyone in this community, and leaves to mourn his departure, besides his faithful wife and children referred to above, a host of relatives and friends who will sorely miss him through the coming days.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Friday, September 8th at 2:30, conducted by Rev. E.C. Vanderpool, assisted by Rev. Galaway. Interment in the Van Wert Cemetery.
