Thursday, August 24, l922AMANDA JANE FRENCH, eldest daughter of ROBERT and ELIZA FRENCH, was born at Decatur, Iowa, October l7, l854, and passed to the Great Beyond at her home in Leon, Iowa, August l5, l922, aged 67 years, 9 months and 29 days. On September 5, l87l, she was united in marriage to THOMAS WALLER, of Decatur, Iowa. To this union has been born eight children, all of whom were present at the funeral, but two, they having gone on before. Those who remain to survive her and mourn their loss are: her husband and six children, CLARENCE, of Archer, Iowa; WILLIAM, of Decatur, Iowa; RAY, of Leon; MRS. MERRIT REYNOLDS, of Leon; CLYDE, of Ackley, Minn.; MRS. CARL REYNOLDS, of LaMars, Iowa, and twenty living grandchildren; she had one little grandson, ANCIL CLYDE WALLER, who has passed on before; she also leaves four sisters: MRS. WINONA FRENCH TINSLEY, of Des Moines; MRS. IONA WELLS, of Adena, Colorado; MRS. NAOMI WELLS, of Denver, Colorado; MRS. EMMA MURPHY, of Spokane, Wash., all of whom, together with many friends and neighbors, mourn her loss.
MRS. WALLER was a good woman, good neighbor and loving mother. She was never more happy than when doing good deeds for her loved ones. We can truly say a good woman has gone to her reward. But this would has been made a better place for her having lived, and to have known her. She united with the Christian Church in l907, and her services were conducted at the Christian Church in Leon by her Pastor, Rev. Olmstead. The hymns sung by her request were, "Nearer My God To Thee," "Lead Thou Me On," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Her casket was banked with flowers of which she was more than usually fond. The following poem was read at her request:
WHEN THE TIDE IS LOW:
Sometime at eve, when the tide is low,
I shall slip my moorings and sail away,
With no response to the friendly hail
Of kindred craft in the busy bay.
In the silent hush of the twilight pale
When the night stoops down to embrace the
day,
And the voices call in the water's flow --
Sometime at eve, when the tide is low,
I shall slip my moorings and sail away.
Thro purple shadows that darkly trail
O'er the ebbing tide of the Unknown Sea,
I shall fare me away with the dip of sail
And the ripple of waters to tell the tale.
Of a lonely voyager, sailing away,
To Mystic Isles, where at anchor lay
The craft of those who have sailed before
O'er the Unknown Sea to the Unseen Shore.
A few who have watched me sail away
Will miss my craft from the busy bay;
Some friendly barks that were anchored near
Some loving souls that my heart held dear
In silent sorrow will drop a tear.
But I shall have peacefully furled my sail
In moorings sheltered from storm or gale,
And greeted the friends who have sailed before
O'er the Unknown Sea to the Unseen Shore.
