JOSEPH N. SMITH was born in Fayette County, Ohio, Aug. 3, l855, and died at Long Beach, Cal., on Aug. 3, l922, the anniversary of his birth, aged exactly 67 years. With the family he removed to Iowa in the spring of l882, residing just north of Leon, on the well known SMITH homestead.

In December, l9l9, with his brother and sister, he moved to Long Beach, Cal., where he made his home till his death.

He was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, having been reared in a truly Christian home, and he entered the church in his early boyhood. He was faithful to his religious obligations as he was to all others, and was sincerely Christian in every relationship of life. For many years, he was one of the most faithful and active members of the Leon Presbyterian Church and his strong convictions and faithful service meant much to the church at this place. His was a life that always stood four-square for all that was right and good.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church. Rev. T.F. Campbell, Pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
