Weeds and grass should be removed from the
sides of the streets, and the
alleys and back yards, before cold weather
comes. This would add to the
appearance of the city and comfort of the
people.

MRS. WESLEY HOWDYSHELT (sic) who recently had
a difficult surgical
operation performed, died at her home near
Decatur City, Sunday morning
at 2 o'clock. The funeral was held Monday
morning at 9 o'clock,
conducted by Rev. Hohanshelt.

The Leon Cigar Factory operated by BOBBITT &
WOOD, was closed last
Saturday by the Sheriff, on a chattel
mortgage for $300 held by the
Exchange Bank. It is to be hoped the boys
can arrange matters so they
will resume.

S.W. HURST is painting his elegant residence
on West Commercial Street,
which adds greatly to its artistic beauty.

There are a great many sidewalks in Leon
which should receive immediate
attention, as they need repairing badly.

Postmaster CONREY has discovered that school
has commenced. He has
found it out by each youngster calling for
the family mail several times
a day.

There are on exhibition at Cesler & Wallace's
Meat Market, two stalks of
corn raised by JAMES LEONARD on CARMEAN's
farm south of Leon, which are
fourteen feet high, it being seven feet to
the ears. Pretty big corn
isn't it?

T.R. EARLY's fast driving mare got away from
him turning the corner by
Col. Ketcham's Saturday evening, throwing TOM
out and overturning the
buggy. The horse ran to the barn where it
stopped with a badly damaged
buggy.

PROF. J.M. HOWELL, formerly of Bethany, is
the democratic candidate for
County Superintendent, in Decatur County,
Iowa. JOHN is a good fellow,
a well educated and practical teacher, and if
elected will prove to be
in every sense well equipped for the position
he seeks. --Bethany
Republican.

All persons interested in the Bethel Cemetery
are requested to meet at
that place on Wednesday, Sept. 20, to assist
in cleaning the graveyard.
