Decatur County Journal
May l3, l909

Wednesday, April 28th was the sixty-first anniversary of the marriage of
MR. and MRS. ROYAL RICHARDSON, of Pleasanton, and their many friends
assisted them in observing the notewrothy event in a manner most
pleasing to that estimable old couple.

MR. and MRS. RICHARDSON were married at Wendell, Massachusetts, April
28, l848. Directly after the ceremony had been performed, they departed
for Dover, Vermont, the home of MRS. RICHARDSON, making fourteen miles
of the journey in a sleigh. For two years following their marriage,
they resided in Massachusetts and then moved to Illinois where they made
their home until l855 when they came to Decatur County, Iowa, and
settled where they now reside. Their household goods were shipped from
their home in Illinois to Burlington, in this state, by rail and hauled
overland in wagons from that point to their new location where now
stands the town of Pleasanton. MR. and MRS. RICHARDSON have been
identified with the progress of this county since the early days and
have contributed in a very large degree to commendable enterprises that
marked the growth of a wilderness to one of the best counties in the
best state in the Union. Their scores of friends all over this section
extend to them heartiest congratulations upon their anniversary and
trust that they will live to celebrate many more.

On the day of their anniversary, the citizens of the town of Pleasanton
gave them a post card shower, the cards being delivered by children who
met at the home of MR. and MRS. A. M. HAAG at 8:30 o'clock that morning
and proceeded to the home of the worthy couple where they almost covered
them with cards. The number reaching eighty-five. The old people were
greatly pleased and after they had recovered from their surprise, they,
with the children, had the group photograph appearing on this page of
the Journal, taken. In the afternoon they were again surprised by some
of the old settlers who gathered at their home. Refreshments, consisting
of ice cream and cake, were served. The old settlers present were: MR.
and MRS. W.A. TONG, MR. and MRS. J.N. PAINTER, MR. and MRS. J.H. SMITH,
MR. and MRS. J.E. LEEPER, MRS. ALDEN, MISS S.L. ALDEN, and J.M. WILLIS,
all of Pleasanton, and MRS. PICKENS, of Cainsville.
