Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
June 21, 1894

Tuesday afternoon FRANK CLARK submitted to a surgical operation at the
residence of his father, I.N. CLARK, of this city. He has been employed in
a dry goods establishment in Des Moines for some time and was taken sick
about two weeks ago. The physicians decided that a surgical operation was
necessary to save his life and for the purpose of having the operation
performed he came home last Sunday. The operation consisted in removing the
vermiform appendix, an attachment on the lower end of the large intestines
which had become gorged with seeds and other substances, resulting in
inflammation and ulceration. The work was successfully performed by Dr.
Gregier, of St. Joseph, assisted by Drs. Brown, Layton and Bowman, of Leon;
Drs. Bone and Landis, of Grand River, and Dr. Hansen, of Lamoni. At present
the patient is resting comfortably, with every prospect of an early
restoration to health.
