~~ Some Old Papers ~~

Last Saturday J.B. SNYDER, who resides east of Leon in High Point Township,
called at the Journal office to show us some very old copies of Leon papers.
He had three copies, the latest being an issue of the Decatur County
Journal dated July 9, 1874. Therein we notice mention of the stage line
running at that time between Leon and Osceola, the card of Doctors Sanford
and Layton, the advertisement of the Hildreth Drug Store, Beck's Drug Store
and many other old time firms. The editor of the Journal at that time was E
S. Best. The oldest paper in the SNYDER collection is a copy of the Weekly
News published in Leon by J.P. And C.P. Finley. This copy is dated March 17
1864. In the issue appear the advertisements of Richards & Hale, general
store; Chas. C. Stout, druggist; James M. Coffin, photographer; the Jenree
Hotel, the Lunbeck Nursery and many others. The News later became the
Decatur County Journal. The other paper of the collection is a copy of the
Leon Pioneer. The date of this paper is July 16, 1869. G.U. Udell, was the
publisher. Among the matter in the Pioneer we notice the announcement of
the Leon Woolen Factory operated in the old days by R.M. Mudgett & Co. The
Pioneer finally became the Democrat Reporter and then the Leon Reporter. Mr
SNYDER and wife value these old papers highly. They were among the effects
of Mrs. SNYDER's father, BEN HAWKINS, who also died many years ago.
