Biography ~ Millicent "Iola" Tordoff
Graceland University

Millicent "Iola" Tordoff was born on May 8, 1917.

Iola graduated from Graceland in 1947, then earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Western Reserve University in teaching medical and surgical nursing. She obtained her R.N. from the Indepenence Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She taught there for nearly 20 years.

Iola was appointed assistant professor at Kansas University Medical Center in 1967, then returned to the "San" in 1968 as a charter member of Graceland's nursing faculty. With Margaret McKevit's consulation, Iola designed the Graceland nursing pin, which was presented for the first time at the first nurses' pinning ceremony in 1971. Iola introduced the first out-of-country winter term for Graceland's nursing students and chose to continue participating in the college's nursing activities after she retired as professor emerita in 1981.

Iola died at the age of 94 years in Independence, Missouri, on March 9, 2012. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on March 15, 2012 at Groves Health Care Center, Floral Hills Chapel in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions were directed to Outreach International c/o Community of Christ.
