BIOGRAPHY ~ BRENDA SUE PARKES
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaBrenda Sue Parkes was born on July 7, 1940, in Taylorville, Illinois.
After receiving her nursing diploma from the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing in 1961, Brenda studied at Graceland during the 1969 fall semester and finished her B.S.N. (1974) and master's (1975) degrees in public health from the University of Michigan. She later completed her Ph.D. through the University of Texas-Austin.
In 1978, Brenda joined the Graceland faculty as the only nursing teacher at the Lamoni campus, where she developed and taught the Human Sexuality course. She relocated to the Independence campus in 1986, helping establish and teach in the Outreach nursing program. Brenda also helped develop and served as the first director of the Learning Skills Program, which assists underprepared students to be successful in the nursing major. Brenda served as dean of Graceland's school of nursing.
Off campus, Brenda has served as the president of the RLDS Professional Nurses' Association. She received Graceland's Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1995.
