BIOGRAPHY - MELVIN KAUILA CLARK
Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa

Melvin Kauila Clark grew up in Wahiawa and graduated from Leilehua High School in 1963. He earned a bachelor's degree in drawing and painting at Graceland University in 1968, and later earned his master's degree in clay and sculpture at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He earned his doctorate at Kansas City, Missouri.

Clark taught as a technical instructor at the University of Puget Sound (1972-1972), a ceramics and sculpture instructor at Penn Valley Metropolitan Community College (1874-1976), taught art and art education as adjunct professor at the University of Kansas (19874-1976), and an adjunct art instructor at Kansas State Penitentiary (1974-1976). Clark returned to Lamoni in 1971 and joined Graceland's faculty, teaching design, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, art history and art appreciation. He left Graceland twelve years later in 1983.

Clark, a master potter, is known internationally for his art work and as an art educator. He has received national, regional and state awards in varioius art exhibitions and has art pieces in 53 foreign countries and 35 states. His work is represented in many art msueums and private collections world-wide, including the Smithsonian, the Native American Museum in Washington, D.C., in the Rosenthal Art Slide Collection in New York and the Chozenji Aret Collection in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Clark's philosophy is something he practices in his daily life.

Clark has served as the director of the Art Galleries at the University and as special intern to the Congressional Arts Caucus, responsible for coordinating with the National Endowment of the Arts to maintain Federal funding for the arts.

Clark made good on his promise to this grandmother when he returned to Hawaii so that the could help the young people of his native state. He took a position as director of a youth drug-treament program in Waianae, helping adolescents stay off drugs. Clakre is a board member of Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. He was the treasurer of the executive committee of the National Association of Community Health Centers in Washington, D.C.

In 2004, Clark taught ceramics at the Chozen-Ji International Zen Dojo temple in Hawaii.

In 2004, Clark returned to Graceland for the dedication of the Helene Center for the Visual Arts, which was held during homecoming weekend on October 3rd. During homecoming weekend, Clark lectured and provided demonstrations as part of the Alumni College events.
