BIOGRAPHY - ALBERT "NEAL" DEAVER"
Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa

Albert "Neal" Deaver was born in Webb City, Missouri, on August 31, 1908.

A. Neal Deaver first worked at Graceland as a bookkeeper from 1929 to 1932, leaving when he completed his A.A. degree. He enrolled at the University of Chicago School of Business and finished his B.A. degree in hospital administration in 1934. Deaver returned to Graceland in 1934 as the college's business manager and director of public relations. During his 13 years in that position, Deaver helped lead the college through the financially difficult period of the Great Depression and World War II. Deaver served as executive secretary of the Graceland Alumni Association and also taught business and economics from 1934 to 1936.

Deaver was responsible for the slogan "Where Maine Meets California," which was synonymous with Graceland for years.

After leaving Graceland in 1947, Deaver served as assistant superintendent of the Independence [Missouri] Sanitarium and Hospital from 1948 to January 1953. He, however, maintained his Graceland connection, serving as a member of the college's Board of Trustees from 1948 to 1952. Deaver retired to Independence, Missouri.
