Lyle Kauffman Drowned

Tuesday afternoon Lyle, the six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Kauffman was drowned at the Brickyard near Glendon.

Lyle and his brother Merle, who is eight years old, were playing in the brick yard and were pushing a board back and forth to each other across a hole from which clay for bricks had been taken, and which the recent rains had filled with water. Lyle slipped and fell in. The water was over his head. His brother Merle jumped in after him, but as he could not swim, he almost drowned. Merle shouted and got the attention of an older boy and the two succeeded in getting Lyle out with a hook. Efforts to bring the boy to life were unsuccessful.

Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church in Dexter Thursday afternoon and interment was made in the Dexter cemetery.

The Kauffman family lived last year northeast of Stuart and this spring moved to a farm near Glendon.
