Gayelord N. Herring, 80, of Dexter, died of lung cancer on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006.

Services were held Saturday, Feb. 4 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dexter. Burial was in the Dexter Cemetery.

Gayelord Herring was born in rural Dallas County on Aug. 24, 1925, the son of George and Ethelend (French) Herring. He attended country school in Dexter. In 1944, at the age of 17, he entered the Army. He married Norma Jean Snyder on Aug. 19, 1950.

He was very active in the affairs of the Dexter community and Dallas County. He was commander for the Dexter American Legion as well as past commander of Dallas County American Legion and the vice commander for the sixth district. He was a former member of the Dexter Community Club, Lions Club and the United Presbyterian Church and was a Union Township trustee.

He was a mechanic for many years, operating his own business in Dexter, then was employed for 20 years at Iowa Machinery of Des Moines. While employed at these jobs, he assisted his father, George Herring, and later operated the family farm north of Dexter. He loved farming and anything related to farming, and worked until recently for Heartland Co-op in Redfield. He also loved working at the Iowa State Fair as a security officer for 20 consecutive years, finishing last August at the age of 79. He much enjoyed the company of fellow workers and had a zest for conversation and the local news. It is difficult to say that he had a hobby. His hobby was working on American Legion affairs, and enjoying the casual conversation of co-workers.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jocelyn Wasson, Ellen Leighty and Margaret Herring; and two brothers, Willard and Leslie Herring.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Herring of Dexter; children Sue Kolander of Slater, Karen Ackerman of Allison, Ken Herring of Earlham and Peggy Hutchins of Linden; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
