Leona E. Heckman, 92, of Dexter, died following a stroke on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 4, at First Presbyterian Church in Dexter. Burial was at Dexter Cemetery.

Leona Heckman was born Dec. 8, 1909, in Audubon County, the daughter of Elmer E. and Martha F. (Krause) Shaefer. She taught country school in the Adair area and attended Capital City Commercial School in Des Moines. On Aug. 12, 1931, she married Gerald Heckman.

She helped her husband farm in Cass, Adair, Dallas, and Madison counties, and worked as a dietician at the Dexter Hospital. She was active with plays with Union #5 and later with the Apple Tree Players in Winterset, and completed the Dale Carnegie course. She enjoyed raising exotic chickens.

She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Kopaska of Dexter, and Vera Shelley of Menlo; two sons, Errol of Dexter, and Glenn of Osceola; one sister, Janette Walker of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Ray Shaefer of Cannon City, Colo., 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; and two step-great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; three brothers; one great grandchild; and one step-great great grandchild.
