Harry Lawrence Blackburn, 77, of Stuart, died at his home Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, of congestive heart failure.

Services were held Friday, Jan 23, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Dexter. Burial was in the Dexter Cemetery in Dexter.

Harry Blackburn was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Trenton, Mo., the son of Albert and Lillian Blackburn. He grew up in Stuart and attended public schools there. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On April 12, 1947, he married Helen Wiese of Dexter. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad in Stuart and Des Moines, Solar Aircraft of Des Moines, and the Adel Elevator.

In January, 1969, he and Helen moved to Dexter, where they bought the Wiese Greenhouse and apple orchard from Helen’s parents. They moved to Stuart after retiring in 1989.

He enjoyed traveling, puttering in his workshop and music. He worked as a volunteer EMT with the Stuart Rescue Squad. He worked part-time at Casey’s in Dexter after retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Stuart.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Stuart; daughters Diana Blackburn of Rogers, Ark., and Esther (Byrd) Martens of Milford, Mich.; a son, Harry Lee Blackburn of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and three sisters, Dorothy Tindle of Las Vegas, Nev., Willa Mae DeCamp of Redfield and Lois Jean French of St. Joseph, Mo.
