Juanita M. Brading, 79, of Dexter, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services were held Tuesday, March 15 at the United Methodist Church in Dexter. Burial was in the Dexter Cemetery in Dexter.

Juanita Brading was born June 19, 1925, in Des Moines, the daughter of George and Mabel Roberts Van Dyke. She graduated from Dexter High School in 1942.

As a teenager, Juanita was a telephone operator in Dexter. She married Dale Winter in Dexter on June 19, 1944. On July 9, 1960, she married Jack Brading.

She owned and operated the Brading Grocery Store in Dexter in the early 1970s. She then became the Dexter City Clerk for 25 years, at which time she also became the first woman certified as a water treatment plant operator in the state of Iowa. She also became the first woman mayor of Dexter at age 70.

She was a member of the Dexter Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, and was the treasurer of both. She was a member of the 20th Century Club, a board member of the Dexter Community Apartments and the Dexter Library Board, and was a member of numerous area bridge clubs. She loved to cook and was a great pie baker. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Van Dyke.

She is survived by three daughters, Chris Overhaug of Winona, Minn. and Nancy Huard and Judy Ress, both of DeSoto; a son, Gary Brading of Fresno, Calif; a sister, Vivian Lawson of Dexter; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
