O. K. Bales was born in Uniontown, Belmont county, Ohio, August 21, 1852. He came to Iowa in 1863 and to this county in 1865, spending one year in Adel and then moving to a farm with his parents.

He was married in Victor, Iowa county, Iowa, to Miss Frances M. Rosecrans, October 31, 1872. To them were born six children, Rose, Emmor, Gertrude, Mildred and Minette (twins) and Francis. Five of the children are not living, Minette having died at the age of two years. In 1898 the mother of this family died. In 1899 Mr. Bales was again married to Mrs. L. L. Macy.

Mr. Bales was in the hardware business for the last thirty years. In earlier life he was in the grain business, and dry goods and groceries. He was a member of the Dexter Lodge, I.O.O.F., and an Odd Fellow since 1874. He was president of the Adel Retail Merchants Association from the time of its beginning and upon his retirement from business the merchants made him an honorary member for life.

On May 23 in company with his doctor and his brother, Emmor Bales, he went to the Mayo hospital at Rochester, Minn. He was operated upon May 25. Hope was entertained that an extension of life might be his for at least two years, but he slipped into unconsciousness on Saturday, May 28, and died Sunday, May 29, aged 58 years, 9 months and 8 days. Besides the children names he leaves his wife and brother, Emmor Bales, of Detroit, and a sister, Jennie B. Kessler, of Lake Coma, Fla.

Mr. Bales was an exemplary citizen, a community man of the highest order, a comrade and companion, wholesome and most forbearing in business relationships. He was a friend of all.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. C. S. Wikoff, and interment was made at Dexter.

The music was furnished by a male quartet composed of Messrs. Roberts, Kaser, Simcoke and Biggs, with Mrs. Simcoke at the piano. The services were afterwards in charge of the I.O.O.F. order. The attendance was large, many people not being able to get inside the church. A large number were here from other towns. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. A violent rainstorm came up during the service and made it impossible to go to Dexter that afternoon. Interment was made Thursday morning.
