Marie Atherton, 87, of rural Earlham, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 at the Community Care Center in Stuart.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 10 at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Dexter. Burial was in the Dexter Cemetery in Dexter.

Marie was born Feb. 6, 1918 on the family farm near Earlham, the daughter of Walter and Leah Stanley Cook. She graduated from Redfield High School in 1935. She taught country school for a few years.

On May 3, 1941 Marie and Allen Atherton were married at their home in rural Dexter.

She was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God in Dexter, the DT Club of Dexter, and the Medley Garden Club. She taught Sunday school for many years and was very active in the life of the church. She was also a Cub Scout den mother. She had a great passion for her faith in Christ, flower gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, sewing, arranging wreaths and flowers, as well as participating in craft shows. She was a poll worker on the Dexter Election Board for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Atherton; and a brother, Carroll Cook.

She is survived by three sons, Bruce of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Mark of Iowa City and Dennis of Des Moines; two sisters, Helen Neal of Dexter and Velma Barnett of Salem, Ore.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
