Regarding George W. Bales, formerly of Dexter, a brother of O. K. Bales of this city, the Sentinel of last week had the following “One of the saddest messages ever given the people of Dexter was the one last Sunday, just before noon, announcing the death of George Wesley Bales, whom we all called “Wes” in an affectionate and friendly way.

He was born in Uniontown, Belmont county, Ohio, August 4th, 1849, and moved with his parents to Iowa in 1863 and to Dexter in 1865. On December 30, 1870, he was married to Miss Emma Hubble, who as the bereaved widow survives him, with the five children all of Dexter, except Rollen Bales of Oelwein, as follows: Eugene C. Bales, Mrs. Mamie McKee, Hazel Bales, Clyde Bales.

The surviving brothers and sisters are O. K. Bales, of Adel, one of our former esteemed citizens, Emmor Bales of Michigan, Mrs. R. J. Kessler of Detroit, Michigan, and Mrs. Anna Gaumer of Fairfield, Iowa.

In May 1884, he joined the Odd Fellows lodge here and for sixteen years had been the trusted treasurer of Dexter Lodge, No. 215. He was a loving husband and father, kind in heart and so affectionate that to him the family ties were almost his whole life. He was a good Odd Fellow, a credit to the order and a faithful attendant on its meetings. Helpful in the sick room and a comrade whom the brothers held in highest esteem.
