Page A5, Columns 1 & 2James F. Adkins, 72, of Dexter, died of a respiratory ailment Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Kavanagh House on Grand in West Des Moines.
Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, of which he was a member. Burial was at Dexter Cemetery.
James Adkins was born Jan. 10, 1930, in Dexter, the son of Antoinette and James Casper Adkins. On Dec. 25, 1949, he married Margaret Daib.
He had lived in Dexter all his life. He had co-owned Adkins Cash Food Center before retiring and was an Air Force veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 419 and had been on the West Central Dollars for Scholars Board, Dexter Community Apartment Board, Dexfield and Dexter school boards, and Dexter Library Board. He had been active with the Dexter Lutheran Church blood drive and Boy Scouts. He had received a Governor’s Volunteer Award for his work with the Dexter Elementary School.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three sons, Kurt of Des Moines, Michael of Greenfield, and Christopher of Earlham; a daughter, Anne Vanderheiden; his mother, Antoinette Adkins; and a brother, Dick, all of Dexter; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Kuhn Funeral Home in Dexter was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to his church or Dexter Elementary School.
