Pg 8 – LeeAlice Davis Crawford died at her home on South Ninth and Park Ave., Des Moines, April 13th, at 11 o’clock. Her death was caused by a dose of strychnine taken by her in a demented moment, caused by ill health and worry over business matters. She had been subject to nervous and despondent spells for the last few weeks, but the attending relatives thought not but to trust her with her own life. She spent the week before at the home of her nephew Leo Miller of Lee township, meeting many of her old friends and enjoying the country air. She accompanied as always, by her niece, Miss Bessie Miller, returned to her city home, Sunday evening in good health and spirits but Wednesday morning when left alone for a few moments, being more despondent than usual, took the deadly poison that so soon ended her life. Though help was immediately summoned, she died in a few moments, after apprising her niece of what she had done and saying she was going to die.
Mrs. Crawford was the widow of the late John Crawford, a formerly wealthy stockman and land owner in Lee township and Booneville. She was born in Union county, Indiana, Oct. 17, 1854 and came with her parents to Iowa when quite young, and has resided since in and near Booneville until the death of her husband about three years ago, when she removed to Des Moines. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Emma Miller of Booneville and one brother, Art Davis of Colorado City, Colo. Mrs. Crawford was always, until this last illness, cheerful and kind-hearted, always ready to do a kind act or say a kind word to those in sorrow or want. She was well respected and loved by all, and not only the children, but the grown friends, called her “Auntie” in fond and loving terms. The funeral took place Friday afternoon at the M.E. church at Booneville. Rev. Proudfoot of Des Moines, preached on the theme, “Fret Not Thyself—Put All Thy Trust in God”. Her body was laid to rest beside that of her husband, father and mother in the Booneville cemetery, attended by many friends and among many beautiful floral tributes.
