On Sunday, May 20, 1883, on the home farm, six miles southeast of Carroll, Iowa, Francis Ethland French was born, the sixth child of Linas and Ella French. She died May 6, 1919 at the Herring farm home north of Dexter at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 16 days.

Older brothers and sisters in the family were John, Minnie, Anna, Orrison and Mary. Ethland was a year old when the family bought and moved to a farm eight miles north of Audubon, which was to be for nineteen years the family’s home. Into it were born five younger brothers and sisters: Ottiuuell, L. N. who died in his second year, Louella, Drusa and Hulett. In the Audubon community, the older sons and daughters were educated and grew to man and womanhood.

In 1902 the family bought the farm one mile north of Dexter and came there to live, moving after a time to live in Dexter. In the year 1905 Ethland became the bride of George E. Herring of the Dexter community, and early in their life together their home was the French farm. Into this home were born six children: Willard, now of Yakima, Washington; Margaret, who died when she was two years of age; Jocelyn Wasson of this community; Ellen Leighty of Dexter; Leslie of Miami, Florida; and Gayelord, living on the home place. There are fourteen grandchildren.

Mrs. Herring was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Margaret, and all her brothers and sisters except Mrs. Louella Ohrt of Mason City and Ottiuuell French of Ruthven.

She is survived by her husband, her five children, fourteen grandchildren and a host of relatives, neighbors and friends.

Funeral rites were held May 9 at the Dexter Methodist church with Rev. Robert D. Williams in charge. Burial was in the Dexter cemetery.
