Barbara Janice Shaw, 80, passed away February 14, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center. Visitation will be 4 to 5 p.m., Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow beginning at 5 p.m. at the church. Private burial will be held at a later date at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.Jan was born on January 16, 1933 in Redfield, Iowa, the daughter of Sydney and Edith Wright. Jan graduated from Redfield High School. On December 20, 1953 she was united in marriage to Donald Shaw. The following year they moved to Des Moines. Jan worked for Iowa Soya after high school and Meredith Publishing for several years after moving to Des Moines. Jan decided to further her education beginning at DMACC and transferring to Drake University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Jan worked at Drake University in Admissions, where she supported the development of a new nursing degree. Jan worked in Human Resources for the Des Moines Public School System until she retired in 2002.Jan enjoyed music, playing the piano, entertaining, cooking and baking sweets. Jan was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was a part of the same bridge group since 1964. She volunteered at Methodist Hospital in guest services. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren.Jan is survived by her husband, Don; son, Todd (Elizabeth) Shaw of Los Gatos, CA and grandchildren, Sarah and Ryan Shaw. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Leona; brothers, Dale, Wayne and Gene "Skip".In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
