Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
November 23, 1933

On October 17th at his home near Dexter, Iowa, Otwell Scott passed from this world to his final reward. 59 years, 11 months and 12 days was his allotted time and just at the closing of the twilight hour came the resting time and his spirit slipped away from the worn and weary body.

This life had its beginning in Marion county, Indiana, near Valley Mills, Nov. 5, 1873, he being the son of Elwood and Rhoda Jay Scott. He was one of a family of twelve children—eleven boys and one girl. Here his early life was spent attending school and helping with the work about the home.

In 1894, at the age of twenty-one he came to Iowa, where he resided for a few years, working and making his home with his uncle and aunt, Isaac and Sarah Barnett. Later he journeyed farther west where he spent a few years, then returning to his native state where he met and married Leona J. Munday, July 28, 1901.

In 1926 he again came to Iowa and since that time has resided in or near the Bear Creek neighborhood.

Since almost two years ago, after a severe illness weakened his heart, his health has steadily declined. Medical care and all that loving hands could do failed to arrest the dread disease which had fastened itself upon him. He often spoke of his going to those who talked with him and said he was ready to go.

Besides the wife, he is survived by a step-daughter, Helen Heden, Chalis, Wash., and a foster son, Willard Thompson, who now resides in Portland, Oregon.

He is also survived by his father, Elwood Scott of Valley Mills, Ind., and four brothers, Frank Scott, Indianapolis, Ind.; Halsey Scott, South Gate, Calif.; Arlie Scott, Centerton, Ind.; Jasper Scott, Valley Mills, and the sister, Lettie Palmer, Valley Mills, Ind.

The mother and two brothers, Elger and Winfield Scott, preceded him to the eternal world. Four brothers died in infancy.

Funeral services were held last Thursday, October 19th, at the Bear Creek church, with the Rev. Paul Barnett in charge. Burial was in the Bear Creek cemetery.
