Mr. John M. Hadley, long-time resident of the Bear Creek neighborhood and better known by the title of “Tite” Hadley, died at ten o’clock this evening after an illness lasting only a few hours. He was stricken at the handles of a plow this afternoon at the Frank Leeper farm and never again opened his eyes on earthly scenes. He passed as all would hope to go, in full possession of his mental and physical faculties, beloved by all who knew him and without an enemy in the world. Funeral services will be held at Penn Center at ten o’clock Sunday morning, after which the remains will be interred in the cemetery, ten miles south of Adair.

John Mathias Hadley was born at Danville, Indiana, December 10, 1857, and died May 20, 1926 aged 68 years, 6 months and 19 days.

He came to Iowa with his parents when a small boy and settled with them on a farm near Dexter, Iowa. In this vicinity he spent the early years of his life. He received his schooling at Bear Creek school.

He was united in marriage to Isabella Diddy of Adel, Iowa, February 1882. Four children were born to them as follows: Amy Ethel, Maud -----, Elmer Earl, and Alma Jane. His wife and children have all preceded him in death.

Shorty after his marriage the deceased moved to Adair County and settled on a farm. After the death of the wife he rented out his farming operation in 1902 and returned to Dexter, making his home with his brother, Allen on the old homestead until his death.

He held a birthright membership at the Friends Church. When he moved to Adair County he joined with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a much loving and ------- member of the Penn Center Methodist Church at the time of his death.

Mr. Hadley had a large body and a robust physique. There was a --------------- to him that made him a welcome guest at every gathering. He was most (unreadable). Those who knew him most intimately never had occasion to revise their esteem of him. He was a genial, steadfast, and dependable friend and brother.

He is survived and mourned by his brother, Allen Hadley, of Dexter, Iowa. There was also three sisters, Julia E. Foulke of Clarksville, Arkansas; Rosa Mills of Floyd, Iowa, and Ollie M. Robinson of Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to these there are five grandchildren and ---- great grandchildren, and several other relatives and a wide circle of appreciative friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Penn Center Methodist Episcopal church, Sunday, May 23, where a capacity crowd gathered to participate in the last rites. Rev. D. J. McKay, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. G. D. ----, a former pastor, conducted the services. The remains were laid to rest in the Eureka cemetery, seven miles north of Fontanelle, Iowa.
