Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
July 1, 1926

John W. Sears, son of Frederick and Amanda Sears was born February 4, 1868 and passed from this life very suddenly, being stricken with heart disease, June 26, 1926 at the age of 58 years, 4 months and 22 days.

His early life was spent on the farm, some four and one half miles northeast of Earlham. Here he helped in the various duties of farm life, helping to break the virgin soil and toward the making of the present day community. All the trials and toils of pioneer life on the Iowa prairies were his, but these he shared with his brothers and sisters.

On January 1, 1896, he was united in marriage to Hattie A. Franklin and to this union three children were born. Always a lover of home, his interests centered in those whose care and oversight were entrusted to him. In January of 1911 he united with the Presbyterian church at Adel and remained a faithful member thereof until his death.

He was a kind, loving, careful considerate father and husband. The welfare of those about him was his chief concern. He was a good neighbor and one on whom dependence could be placed.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, the three daughters, Mrs. Marie Eberhardt, Mrs. Evenie Robinson and Mrs. Darlyne Holcomb, all of Des Moines; two brothers, Chas. Sears of Greenfield, Fleming Sears of Earlham, and one sister, Mrs. Elsie Prohaska, of Earlham, and two little grandchildren. Besides these near relatives there are others and a host of friends that mourn with the grief-stricken relatives.
