Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
April 16, 1925

The last page of an earth life has been turned, another has passed through the Valley of the Shadow and entered into life eternal.

Edward Mendenhall, eldest son of Calvin and Deborah Walton-Mendenhall, was born May 8, 1858 near his last home and has practically spent his entire life there. He was one of a family of six children. The father, mother, one brother and two sisters have preceded him to the heavenly home.

He was born of Quaker parentage and died in that faith, believing and trusting in the One who saves from all sin. When the Burden Bearers class in the Sunday School was organized he became a member and was anxious to attend as long as health permitted.

He was of a quiet, unassuming nature, preferring the quiet home life. In the early stages of the disease he realized the seriousness of his condition and quietly arranged his business, turning all care to other hands and clearly demonstrating that “whichever way the wind doth blow” he was resigned to have it so that he had faith to say: “I’ll leave it to a higher Will.

After almost ten years of failing health when seemingly everything was done by physicians and careful diet that could be to check the ravages of disease, the quiet, cheerful spirit went home April 9, 1925, at the age of sixty-six years and eleven months.

He is survived by two sisters, Miss Phoebe Mendenhall and Mrs. Elma Compton. Four nephews, two nieces and other relatives and friends are left to mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held at the Bear Creek church Saturday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by the pastor Rev. Bernice Riddle.

The body was carried to its final resting place in the cemetery near by, by former school mates and friends.
