Charlotte Richards Payton died Sunday, Nov. 25 at her home in Van Meter, Iowa, after a brief illness, being 79 years, 7 months and 5 days of age. She was born in Stark County, near Canton, Ohio April 20, 1844, settling four miles southwest of Van Meter in 1866.

She was married March 1, 1866 to John F. Payton, who preceded her in death 17 years ago.

Mrs. Payton was known to everyone in the community. She was a member of Methodist Episcopal churches at Blue Ridge and Van Meter respectively.

The following children survive their beloved mother: W. E. Payton, Monrovia, Cal.; Mrs. Minnie Ellen Payton, of Missouri; Warren Batelle, Van Meter; Mrs. Rose Catharine Torode, Okmulgee, Okla.; Mrs. Emma Lota Payton, Van Meter; Mrs. Della Grace Thornton, DeSoto; Roy Drabell Payton, Earlham. Byron W. Payton passed away some years ago.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Van Meter Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m., Rev. W. P. Fink officiating. Burial was in Van Meter Cemetery.
