Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
July 1899

Susan Alkire, daughter of Thomas and Mary Brown, was born in Ohio February 13, 1840. She removed with her parents to Indiana, then to Illinois, and came with the family to Iowa in October, 1866. She was married to Washington Alkire, May 7, 1868, and settled on the farm in Dallas county where she died on July 11, 1899.

Mrs. Alkire was converted in early life, uniting with the Cumberland Presbyterian church, near where they lived. Some years after coming to Iowa she united with the Presbyterian church of Earlham. She was a devoted follower of the Master, a faithful wife, mother and friend. A husband, one son, one daughter, one brother and four sisters survive her, together with many relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

Deceased had been a most patient sufferer in her long illness and she entered the dark valley of death confident that at the other side she would enter the celestial city, there to dwell forever with Christ Jesus.

The funeral service was held at her late home on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. D. MacMillan, and was attended by a large concourse of people. She was laid to rest in the McKibben cemetery.
