Elizabeth L. Martin, 84, of 1523 W. Fifth St., died Thursday, April 30, at Covenant Medical Center of complications of a stroke.

She was born Dec. 15, 1907, in Marseilles, Ill., daughter of Jacob Clair and Blanche Ashbrook Lamkin. She married Harry L. Martin on Oct. 3, 1927, in Waterloo. He died in 1964.

She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and taught at Orange High School and Central High School until retiring in 1974. She then was a substitute teacher until 1990.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry Martin of Hermiston, Or., and Larry Martin of Seattle; a daughter, Mary Kay Peterson of Waterloo; two sisters, Kathryn Smith and Mary Thielen, both of Waterloo; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons in infancy.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at First Methodist Church, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Friends may call at Locke Funeral home from 2 to 6 p.m. today, on Monday until noon, and an hour before services at the church. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Waterloo Public Library.
