Florence (Mrs. Howard) Benshoof, 95, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at Grand Haven Retirement Community of Eldridge, Iowa.
Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. A service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Dallas Center. Memorials may be made to the DeWitt Opera House.
Florence Lucille Lange Benshoof was born April 14, 1916, in New Ulm, Minn., to Arthur and Elsa Lange. She and her family moved to Wall Lake, Iowa, in the 1920s and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1934. Florence attended Morningside College, University of California at Berkley and Drake University. She was in teaching and administration in public education for 40 years, 25 of them in the Des Moines School District until her retirement in 1978.
Florence was joined in marriage to Howard Benshoof; the family lived and participated in the communities of Liberty, Missouri, as well as Dallas Center, Johnston, Norwalk, Winterset and DeWitt, Iowa. Florence and Howard moved to DeWitt in 1991. She was a member of PEO, Alpha Delta Kappa, Eastern Star, Farm Bureau Women, United Methodist Church and a variety of music and educational organizations.
Preceeding her in death were husband, Howard, son, Max and granddaughters, Debbie, Bettilu and Jessica.
She is survived by her sons, Dan Benshoof of Tampa, Fla., and Ted Benshoof of Winterset; her daughter, Barb Peavey of DeWitt; her daughter-in-law, Betty Benshoof of Bloomington, Ind.; 17 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
