Rites for Martin J. Smith, 71 of Redfield, Iowa and former resident of Westfield was held Wednesday, May 9, at St. John's Catholic Church at Adair, Iowa. Burial was in St. John's Catholic cemetery at Adair.

Mr. Smith was employed by the Fullerton Lumber Co. in Westfield from 1943 to 1949 and manager coach of the Westfield baseball and basketball teams for several years. He was married March 31,1927 to Ina L. Stowell at Ayrshire. He was employed by Fullerton Lumer and resided at Denison and Westfield before moving to Adair where he was manager from 1949 to 1956. Mr. Smith moved to Atlantic and was employed by Darland Construction Co. and E. C. Henningsen. Later he operated a cafe in Cumberland moving to Redfield in 1967. He had been at the Crestwood Nursing home since April.

Surviving besides his widow are a son, Eugene of Fontanelle; three daughters, Mrs. Charles Boettger of Carter Lake, Mrs. Frank Wagers of Redfield and Mrs. Robert Cooper of Atlantic; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
