Funeral Held In Ida Grove (21 Dec 1972)

KIRON...Robert Houston Hewitt was born in Hayes Township of Ida County August 3, 1890 and died at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove Thursday evening, December 21, at the age of 82 years, four months and 18 days.

He attended local grade school and took a business course at the Sac City Institute in Sac City. It was at the Institute he met Emma Ford and March 17, 1912 they were married at Kanawha. They had one son.

Mr. Hewitt was employed in a hardware store in Mitchellville until 1952, when he moved to Kiron where he entered into business. His wife, Emma, died in 1944. In 1949 he married Anna Garner at a service conducted in Elk Point, South Dakota. In 1964 Anna died.

Mr. Hewitt was active in community affairs and offered helpful services to many persons. His last official proposal at a church business meeting at the Kiron Evangelical Free Church was during the recent flood disaster at Rapid City, South Dakota, when he himself offered $50.00, hoping the church to match this, which was promptly decided and done.

He served for a number of years on the Board of the Kiron Telephone Company, and most recently as president. He was active in the local Community Club and occasionally was mayor pro-tem of Kiron.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday in August, 1970, he offered an open house to the community. He was a member of the Kane Masonic Lodge of Ida Grove for over 50 years. He was a member of the Kiron Evangelical Free Church.

In late July, Mr. Hewitt was hospitalized at the Horn Memorial Hospital, having suffered a massive stroke which paralyzed him and left him with a speech failure. After three weeks at the hospital, he was moved to Colonial Manor in Odebolt.

Survivors include his son, Bill, of Fairview, Illinois, a brother, Charles of Battle Lake, Minnesota, five nieces, six nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 26, 1972 at the Christiansen Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. T. W. Danielson officiated. Kane Lodge 377, AF&M conducted Masonic services December 23, at the Funeral Home.
