John Edward Gustafson was born December 25, 1861 at Stenstorp, Rolfstrop socken, Halland, Sweden. He immigrated to America May 5, 1885 and resided a few years in Illinois, later coming to this community where he has resided ever since.

On Feb 24, 1891 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Carlson. They lived together, a happy married like for 27 years. Twelve children were born to this union, four died in infancy: Milda Sophia, Edward Jubel, Walter Fredolph and Sidney Floyd. In 1920 his wife passed away at the age of 47 years. He deeply mourned her passing and longed to join her in a better land. He was converted to God and baptized into the Kiron Mission church by Rev. Modig in September 1901. On Sept. 20, 1910 he joined the Arthur Baptist church, where he was a member until his death.

He has been a helpless cripple for about 30 years, as a result of inflammatory rheumatism. His last illness was of short duration and he died happy in the Lord, on Friday August 10, 1934 at the age of 72 years, 7 months and 13 days. Mr. Gustafson was a sincere Christian, interested in God's cause and in the work of the church. He loved his Savior, loved to read the Bible and to commune with God. Mr. Gustafson was highly esteemed as a neighbor and friend and was a kind and loving father. During his helplessness he was given considerate care by his family. Although he endured much suffering he was very patient.

Those who mourn his going are the eight living children, Arvid and Richard of Kiron, Vernie of Los Angeles, California, Elmer of Kiron, Mildred of Alta, Russell, Elving and Sidney of Kiron, five grandchildren, one sister residing in Sweden and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Arvid Gustafson home and at 2:00 o'çlock from the Arthur Baptist church conducted by the pastor Rev. Arthur Erickson assisted by Rev. E. J. Nordlander and Rev. H. A. Faugerstrom. Special singing was rendered by the ladies trio, consisting of Myrtle and Ellen Nelson and Goldie Loomer. There were many beautiful floral offerings speaking in silence of the high esteem for the departed. The active pall bearers were five sons, Arvid, Richard, Russell, Alvin and Sidney and Ralph Salmon. Honorary pall bearers were: Gust Belstein, Nels Bergman, Frank Heitman, B. A. Samuelson, K. J. Palm, and Axel Segerstrom. He was laid to rest besides his wife in the Hayes township cemetery.

There was a large gathering at the funeral, a number of relatives from Galva and Sioux City and many friends from Odebolt, Arthur and Kiron.
