Mona Darlyne Christiansen Schillerberg 1920 - 2003

Mona Darlyne Christiansen Schillerberg was born on a farm near Kenwood, Iowa in Crawford County on June 4, 1920. She was the daughter of Edward August Carl and Leva Marie Killion Christiansen. She died Saturday, bruary 15, 2003 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-two.

Darlyne was baptized at the First Methodist Church in Denison on March 12, 1921. She graduated from Charter Oak High School with the class of 1937. Darlyne went on to study at a summer program given through a branch of Cedar Falls and Iowa Tech of Sioux City, Iowa. She then taught in rural schools in Crawford County for four years. Darlyne was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on October 5, .

On December 25, 1941, she married Harold George Schillerberg of Hanover Township. During the first year of their marriage, they lived on a farm in Soldier Township, near Ricketts, Iowa. They then purchased a farm that was five miles east of Denison and lived there twenty-three years. Harold experienced farm accidents which caused him and Darlyne to change occupations. They purchased the Delux Motel in Ida Grove in November of 1965. After eight years, they retired to Schleswig in 1973. In 1991, Darlyne and Harold returned to Denison.

Darlyne was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid. She enjoyed singing in choirs, playing golf, reading, sewing clothes and making quilts. She spent time as a salesperson for Raleigh's Products, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, and World Book Encyclopedia. For a time, she worked in Harker's Variety in Denison. Darlyne was also a 4-H Leader for several years.

Darlyne was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harold in 1997. Survivors include five daughters, Nancy Barango of Chicago, Illinois; Lois Hofer and her husband, Rev. Dr. Paul of Aurora, Colorado; Shirley Kloes and her husband, Tom of Menasha, Wisconsin; Susan Smillie and her husband, Rev. Dr. Gene of Madrid, Spain; Alice Schillerberg and her husband, Dr. Michael Albrich of Portland, Oregon; one son, Edward Schillerberg and his wife, Peggy of Cripple Creek, Colorado; sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday bruary 18, 2003 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. David Loeschen officiated the service and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Garden in Denison, Iowa. Mary Kuhlmann provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns ""Beautiful Savior"", ""How Great Thou Art"" and ""I was There to Hear Your Borning Cry"". Pallbearers were: Shane Schillerberg, Justin Schillerberg, Dennis Backhaus, Scott Hofer, Keith Gordon, Chris Hofer and Bruce Aldag. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to return to the church to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
