Alvin Otto Eck was born on May 20, 1919, at Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Fred and Bertha Eck. He died on Sunday, September 17, 1978, at the Truman Medical , Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 59.
Alvin was raised on a farm near Charter Oak and received his first formal education in the rural schools in the area. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. During the time of his confirmation he attended the Lutheran School in Charter Oak. In Alvin graduated from the Charter Oak High School.
During World War II, Alvin served in the United States Army. Upon his release from the military, he farmed in the Charter Oak area until 1970 when he semi-retired. In 1977 he moved from the farm and made his home in Charter Oak. At the time of his death he was doing zoning work for the City of Charter Oak.
Alvin served his community in many ways including service on the Crawford County Fair Board. He was a past president of the Crawford County Pork Producers and was very active in his church.
Alvin was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Bertha Eck of Charter Oak, one brother, Fritz of Mapleton and one sister, Marcella, Mrs. Loren Hopp of Hudson, Wisconsin. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 20, 1978, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. Robert Leege officiated at the services.Serving as pallbearers were Eldon Goslar, Edward Goslar. Merlyn Eck, Herman Schneckloth, Harold Schneckloth and Lavern Wessel. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Charter Oak.
