Joan Braasch, Two Years of Age, Passed Away at Sioux City

Joan Braasch, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Braasch of near Schleswig, passed away in the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City on Saturday evening, December 19, at 6:30 o’clock, after a short illness.

Always being strong and healthy, little Joan took cold the first of the week, and as she did not improve, but seemed a little worse, a doctor was called on Thursday evening, who did not think her to be very ill as she was playful and ate, but seemed short of breath. She remained under medical care, the doctor having visited her again on Saturday morning. In the afternoon at about two o’clock she seemed shorter of breath and a temperature developed. The doctor was again called and upon examination rushed her to Sioux City where Joan was immediately operated on and a tube inserted in her throat. She withstood the operation as well as could be expected and for a time great hopes were entertained for her recovery. However, she began to fail and at 6:30 o’clock Saturday evening, she passed away in the arms of her father. The cause of her death was troikeyitis [tracheitis].

Joan Braasch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Braasch, was born on March 20, 1934 and passed away at the tender age of 2 years, 8 months and 29 days. She was baptized by the Rev. C. Runge, then of the Hanover township Lutheran church, several weeks after birth.

Joan was the only child, and being a good natured, beautiful daughter, with a sweet smile for everyone, she was greatly loved by her parents and all who knew her. Her sudden passing has left her parents grief stricken.

The little body was taken to the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Quandt. Funeral services were held at the home at 1:00 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and at 1:30 in the Hanover Lutheran church, in charge of the Rev. H. M. Zabel. She was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church. Pall bearers were, Orland Reimer, Paul Christiansen, Jr., Irvin Bielenberg and Walter Klinker.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Gilbert, who passed away two years ago at the age of 2 years, 11 months and 27 days.

She leaves to mourn her untimely death her parents, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Quandt, of near Charter Oak and Mr. and Mrs Heinrich Braasch in Germany, besides a number of other relatives and friends.
