Mrs. John Thompson.

On last Friday morning, June 8, 1917, occurred the death of Mrs. John Thompson, at the family home in Vail, after a lingering illness. Her death was due to a complication of diseases. Although she had been ill for many months and her death was expected, it came as a shock to her many relatives and friends. Helen Belle Short was born February 6, 1858, in Melville. Peel county, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Mathes Short. She came to the United States with her parents, stopping a few months in Chicago, then coming to Boone April, 1874. They moved to Vail August of 1875, where they have spent their entire married life. She is survived by her husband and three children: Mrs. Anna Munday, of this town; George A. Thompson, of Onawa. Her son, Dr. Robert B. Thompson, died January, 1907. Three sisters and one brother survive, they are: Mrs. Agnes White and Miss Margaret Short, of Vail, Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis, of Omaha and Adam Short of this place. One brother, James Short, died a few years ago. All of her children and brother and sisters were prsent at the funeral. In her death a kind, patient and loving wife and mother, who had done her part in life, passed to the great beyond. She leaves many friends, who will join in the sorrow of the husband and children at her departure, but firm in her belief that a true christian life has ended on earth to enter upon a happier andand a better one. Early in life she united with the Presbyterian church of Boone and transferred her membership to the church here and continued an earnest member. For many years, she acted as the president of the Woman's Missionary society and was the treasurer of the Ladies Cemetery association for a number of years. She was a charter member and first matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Olive Branch Chapter, No. 205. The funeral services were held at the family residence Saturday morning, June 9, conducted by Rev. Harvey Hostettler, D.D. of California Junction and the Order of the Eastern Star. The body was laid to rest in the Vail cemetery by the side of her son and her father and mother. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse.
