Clara Augusta Winey was born at Ricketts, Iowa, February 12, 1919, the daughter of Oscar and Hulda Amelie Hesse Hottendorf. She was raised in Crawford County and received her education in the rural schools.

On March 20, 1943, Clara was united in marriage with LeRoy Arthur Winey at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Mary Lou and Katheryn Anne.

They made their home on the farm north of Deloit until moving to Denison in 1970. After moving to Denison Clara was employed as a clerk at Montgomery Wards from 1970 until 1977. She then was employed at Denison Job Corps and later at the Hy-Vee Bakery from which she retired.

LeRoy and Clara joined the Deloit United Methodist Church in 1946 and were active members until it's closing when they transferred their membership to First United Methodist Church in Denison. From 1946 until 1970, Clara was president of the WSCS at Deloit. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, reading, baking and watching "Little House On The Prairie".

In 2002, LeRoy and Clara moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where LeRoy died December 21, 2002.

Clara died at Eventide Wednesday afternoon, September 5, 2007. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 88 years, 6 months and 23 days.

Including her parents and husband, Clara was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Leonard, Milroy and Robert Hottendorf and three sisters, Margaret Tibbetts, Mabel Tech and Rosa Lein.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include two daughters and their husbands, Mary Lou and Laurie Mays of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, and Katheryn Anne and Todd Fokken of Papillion, Nebraska, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Lucille Lingle of California, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing "Precious Memories", "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art" with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at the Deloit Cemetery, Deloit, Iowa. Following the service everyone was invited to join the family in the church fellowship hall for a time of sharing and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women.

A memorial has been established to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
