H. Shirley Olberding was born at Colome, South Dakota, September 4, 1921, the daughter of Roy and Helen Aitken Boerner. The family resided in South Dakota until she was 12 years of age when they moved to Glenwood, Iowa and Shirley attended the rural schools at Bartlett, Iowa. The family then moved to the Odebolt, Iowa area where she was graduated from the Odebolt High School with the class of 1939.

On December 20, 1939, Shirley was united in marriage with Wayne Anderson at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on farms at Odebolt, Boyer, Deloit and north of Kiron before building a home in Kiron where they resided for ten years. They then returned to the farm at Boyer where they were residing when Wayne died July 19, 1970. Following Wayne's death Shirley remained on the farm and was employed at Fred's Café in Denison for seven years.

On December 1, 1975, Shirley was united in marriage with Erwin A. Olberding at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. They made their home in Denison until moving to Mesa, Arizona in 1989, having spent the winter months there for many years. While residing in Mesa, Shirley was an active member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary.

Ewin died April 25, 1996 and Shirley remained in Mesa until moving to Sierra Vista, Arizona in April of 1997.

In January of 1999 Shirley moved to Denison, Iowa, where she resided until entering the Carroll Health Center March 14, 2002.

In earlier years while on the farm Shirley enjoyed gardening, especially her strawberry patch, and fishing, and in later years she enjoyed walking and playing bingo.

Shirley died early Saturday, September 1, 2007, at the Carroll Health Center, Carroll, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 85 years, 11 months and 27 days.

Including her parents and her two husbands, Shirley was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Eileen Anderson, grandson, James Anderson, great grandson, Alexander Barton, and two brothers, Deane and Robert Boerner.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include three children, Sharyl and husband, Don Mildenstein of Denison, Larry Anderson of Boyer, Iowa, and Garry Anderson and wife, Peggy of Sierra Vista, Arizona, 9 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, two sisters, Kay Linman of Harlingen, Texas and JoAnne Jenkins of Denison, one brother, Jerry Boerner and his wife, Beverly of Mesa, Arizona, sister-in-law, Larrine Boerner of Sac City, Iowa, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Velma Pedersen served as lector for the service. Music was provided by St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing "On Eagles Wings", "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" with Judy Thams serving as organist. Pallbearers included Kevin McFarland, Kim McFarland, Randy Kennebeck, Richard Barton, Gene Thompson and Michael Siegner. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the Parish Center and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the St. Rose Ladies Guild.

The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where on Monday, September 3, 2007, a Legion of Mary Rosary, led by Richard and Rosemarie Penn, was prayed at 4:30 p.m. and a Parish Vigil Service, led by Father Paul Kelly was held at 6:00 p.m. Online condolences may be directed to www.pfannebecker.com
