Weed, Joseph B. "Joe"
October 21, 1929 - July 6, 2007

Joseph B. Weed passed away on July 6, 2007.

Joe was born in Ute on October 21, 1929, to Bernard and Goldie Weed. He and his older brother Ed spent most of their youth on the 114 acre family farm located on Highway 141 between Ute and Charter Oak. The boys attended a one-room school through eighth grade, then completed high school in Charter Oak. After graduating in 1948, Joe attended Iowa State College, earning his B.S. in Agriculture Education in 1952.

Joe served as a forward observer in the Korean Conflict from 1952 through 1954. He held the rank of first lieutenant in the A Battery of the 52nd Field Artillery of the 24th Division. After his release from the Army, he married his fiancee Virginia Joyce Pepples of Boone, Iowa, on July 16, 1954. He also accepted his first high-school teaching position in the Glidden-Ralston Community School in Glidden, Iowa, where he taught vocational agriculture for the next 11 years.

Joe and Joyce's family grew between 1956 and 1959 with the births of their three children -- DeeAnna Jo, Joseph Charles, and Randall Jay. Joe also continued his formal education at Iowa State University during those years and received a M.S. degree in Agriculture Education in 1960.

In 1965, Joe accepted a position with the Maurice-Orange City Community School in Orange City, Iowa. During his five years in Orange City, he built a Vocational Agriculture department that quickly became very popular with his students and a valuable addition to the school system. In addition to learning the regular vo-ag curriculum, Joe's students discovered the value of community service by completing projects useful to the community. As one notable example, Orange City still flies the Dutch provincial flags along a handsome avenue of flag poles constructed by Joe's students in 1966.

In 1970, Joe became a sales representative for Land O'Lakes (now Cenex) and moved the family to Ute to be closer to his parents, brother Ed, and the family farm. After 15 years of working for Land O'Lakes, Joe accepted early retirement from the company and returned to teaching. He worked for several years as a GED instructor at Job Corps in Denison, then taught vocational agriculture, science, and other subjects full time from 1988 to 1994 in the East Monona Community School District in Moorhead. After retiring from full-time teaching, Joe substitute taught for several more years in local schools. As a tribute to his legacy as an effective and inspiring teacher, students from Glidden, Orange City and Moorhead have continued to keep in touch with Joe.

In his retirement years, Joe took a lively and active interest in his family. He happily guided his nine grandchildren toward a love of life and learning -- sweetened with frequent bribes of chewing gum. Joyce and Joe, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004, traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Hungary and Australia.

Joe also liked doing furniture-making and carpentry projects, tending to the family's orchard and large vegetable garden, visiting with friends, and occasionally doing hog chores for his sons. He was a member of the Iowa Association of Agricultural Educators and American Legion and a life member of the National Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Bernard Edward and Goldie Gladys (McNees) Weed and his brother Edward McNees Weed. He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter DeeAnna and husband Charles Kelly, sons Joe C. and Randy, Randy's wife Lori, and nine grandchildren: Courtney Marie, Candice Jo, Carmen Renee, Colby Joseph, Elyse Joyce, Tanner Edward, Savanna Randi, Mitchell Jay and Dallas Joe.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Kenneth Baughman officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Service music was provided by Tim and Kellie Peterson as they sang "On Eagle's Wings," and "It Is Well With My Soul," with Kellie also providing piano accompaniment. The congregation sang the hymn "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Thomas McIntosh, Robert Kendall, Denis Leiting, Orlen Creese, Allan Mays, Darrell Nielsen. Ed Henkenius, Keith Sawin, Gene Soukup, and Bob Schott. Those serving as pallbearers were Ried Holverson, Chuck Pepples, Tony Pepples, Roger Oolman, Jason Winegar, and Mark Plendl. Military honors were provided by the V.F.W. Post 5605 & American Legion Post 442 of Ute, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Ute Town & Country, served by Staley's Food Service. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.
