Caroline Marie Petersen was born September 12, 1915, the daughter of Max and Dora Blunk Quandt. She died Thursday, March 15, 2007 at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of ninety-one.

Caroline was born in Charter Oak and received her education at country school in Hanover. On January 16, 1935 she was united in marriage to Richard H. Petersen at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm in Ida Grove and were blessed with the birth of three children. The couple then moved to Blue Island, Illinois, later returning to Iowa, living in Kenwood. In 1946, they moved to a farm near Charter Oak and farmed until 1960, when they moved into town in Charter Oak and in 1962, purchased Dick's Tavern and Café. Caroline became famous for her cooking, especially her hamburgers. The couple operated the tavern and café for seventeen years, until their retirement in 1972.

Caroline was a wonderful mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and socializing with friends. She was an avid Euchre player and also enjoyed playing bingo. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard in 1998; one brother, Herb Quandt and his wife, Anna; three sisters, Edna Boeck and her husband, Carl; Mildred Braasch and her husband, Henry; and Margaret Quandt. She is survived by two sons, Lloyd and his wife, Lois of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and Larry of Charter Oak; one daughter, LaVonne Stamp and her husband, Leroy of Elkhorn, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Garnet Witt of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 19, 2007, at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and graveside rites held at St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Art Beeck provided accompaniment for the soloist hymn, "How Great Thou Art," and the congregational hymns, "Amazing Grace," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were LuVerne Kohnekamp, Sophia Sailer, Bob Nocita, Edna Johannsen, Ardis Nelson, and Irma Fretz. Those serving as pallbearers were Charles McKown, Mark Heffernan, Nick Heffernan, John Heffernan, Dean Petersen, and Peter McKown. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
