Lois was born and raised in the Ida Grove/Schleswig, Iowa area. She was baptized in Christ, July 19, 1936, at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. She began her education in country school and then graduated from Schleswig High School, with the Class of 1954.

On July 3, 1954, Lois was united in marriage to Richard Hans Pickel at the Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota. The couple made their first home in Omaha at the Offutt Air Force Base, where Richard served during his military service. In 1957, they returned to Crawford County and farmed for several years, before settling on the family farm northwest of Schleswig. In 1996, the couple moved into their home in Schleswig.

Lois was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, where she was confirmed on December 19, 1954, and took care of the cradle roll for several years. She helped her husband with the farm and with his insurance paper work, in later years. She enjoyed traveling with her children, fishing, camping, scrapbooking, and playing the clarinet in the Schleswig German Band.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard, in 2001. Survivors include one son, Richard D. Pickel of Des Moines; two daughters, Lori Kragel and her husband, Gene of Ute; Lashelle Carlson and her husband, Lloyd Jr. of Norwalk; three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda Miller and her husband, Robert of Springville, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less," "Sheltered in the Arms of God," and "Lift High the Cross." Those serving as pallbearers were Murlin Johannsen, Scott Bielenberg, Dale Lafrentz, Bernhard Pickel, Rawlo Kastner, and Larry Rix. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.
