Ruth M. Schmidt was born on the farm west of Vail, Iowa, where she lived all of her life, November 10, 1928, the daughter of John Robert and Celinda Frances North Algoe. She was baptized at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail December 9, 1928, and confirmed there March 22, 1940. She received her early education, through the third grade, at the East Boyer #2 rural school and then attended Vail Public School through the 11th grade before being graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1949. She later attended C E School of Commerce in Omaha, Nebraska being graduated in 1962 with a JR Accounting Degree.

On February 28, 1968, Ruth was united in marriage with Raynard Schmidt at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on the farm west of Vail.

In addition to being a busy homemaker, farmwife and mother, Ruth was employed through the years in the Dietary Department at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, a school cook from 1958 until 1962 at AR-WE-VA, was employed in accounting at Marvin's Provisions from 1962 until 1964, and from 1964, until her retirement October 10, 1975, Ruth was employed as a Billing and Payroll Clerk at IBP in Denison. Following retirement Ruth and Raynard enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in Arkansas.

Ruth was a life long member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where she was a member and past president of the United Presbyterian Women and a member of the Willing Workers Quilting Club. She was an over 60 year member of the Olive Branch Chapter #205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa, having served as Worthy Matron in 1952.

In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with family, crocheting, quilting, reading and writing letters.

Ruth died Tuesday morning, February 6, 2007, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 78 years, 2 months and 26 days.

Including her parents, John and Celinda Algoe, Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Albert Fett, two brothers, James and Ralph Algoe and three sisters, Bernice Crane, Lucille Carlson and Muriel Algoe.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her loving and caring husband of over 38 years, Raynard Schmidt of Vail, one daughter, Barbara and husband, William Adams of Vail, one granddaughter, Melissa Adams of Vail, many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2007, at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa, with the Rev. Kevin J. Freese officiating. Music for the service was provided by Glenn Freese singing "In The Garden", "The Lord's Prayer" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" with Ruth Noelck serving as organist. Honorary pallbearers included Henry I. Olson, Ronald G. Crane, Margie Jordan, Marge Fett, Dale and Evelyn Crane, Henry J. and Anna Marie Olson, Albert and Marilyn Glienke, Gordon and Marilyn Fett and Gene and Marlene Schneider. Pallbearers were David R. Blair, Timothy Baughman, Terry Glienke, Darrell Schmidt, Dean Schmidt, Delbert Schmidt, Paul C. Olson and Byrle Algoe. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Presbyterian Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 8, 2007, an Eastern Star Service was held conducted by the Olive Branch Chapter #205, Order of Eastern Star, Vail, Iowa.
